Simple DIY Fall Outdoor Decor Ideas
Simple and inexpensive DIY fall outdoor decor ideas that make a big impact with minimal effort!
Decorating your outdoors for fall can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. As you may know, I often prefer to take the simpler more minimalist approach to decorating – including outdoor fall decorations!
As we head into those cooler months of this time of year, I wanted to share with you some simple yet stylish fall outdoor space decorating ideas to help inspire you.
Let’s start by taking a look at this years fall porch! I kept it really simple – I didn’t even buy one mum or large pumpkin!
Front Door DIY Fall Outdoor Decor Ideas
When it came to decorating the front door area of our home, I decided to make it challenging for myself. In years past, mums and white pumpkins were my go-to for fall decorating. But this year I just wanted to totally skip the mums. Am I crazy? Perhaps – but that’s a whole different post. 🙂
So I was skipping the mums and I was just going to use fall elements that I already owned. I started looking through my fall decor storage and found my faux pumpkins, lots of faux eucalyptus and grabbed a couple of large baskets.
The step-by-step tutorial could not be easier! And I love how the large pumpkins are the stars of the whole display. A very classic and elegant look for fall that would be fantastic in bushel baskets as well.
The finishing touches was to add an outdoor lantern here and there and call it – perfect! And not one mum died a slow death in the making of this fall display. 😉
Another simple update I made was switching out my front door rug. It creates such a warm welcome with my Hey There Pumpkin doormat. I’ve had this for years but I just haven’t found a fall doormat I love more – so it just keeps coming back out! 🙂
Favorite Porch Decor Ideas From the Past
If you can’t bare to skip the mums, I have some beautiful fall displays featuring them from years past. One year, I stepped out of my love for neutrals and even went with bright plum colored mums!
This simple but creative fall display featured a DIY outdoor pumpkin topiary with mums and pumpkins placed all around. Still a great way to decorate the front porch!
Another year I was all about the mums – big, beautiful mums! These large mums took center stage next to the door with only a few pumpkin filled lantern holders. Super simple look and very colorful too!
Now that you’ve seen my fall decorations for the front of the house, let’s make our way to the backyard deck!
Backyard Deck DIY Fall Outdoor Decor Ideas
In years past when I’ve shared with you fall home tours, they were often published in September. So our backyard elm tree never got to show off. Well, this year – you are in for a treat!
Our backyard tree takes up a huge section of our backyard. In the summer it provides a ton of shade -which is great. But now in the fall season – it fills our backyard with amazing colors!
For a simple centerpiece on the outdoor table seating area, I displayed an arrangement of dry hydrangeas. So easy to create and adds a nice fall foliage texture to the table with the real pumpkin as well. I’m already thinking maybe next year I will try to use the dried hydrangeas in a DIY fall wreaths tutorial!
The outdoor dining table got a dried hydrangea arrangement as well. And a little ambiance thanks to a pillar candle here and there! If you don’t want to use real candles, fairy lights would be another easy way to add some twinkle to your fall decor.
To tie into the light green color of the hydrangeas, I added several fresh pears next to a few plastic pumpkins. They add a nice contrast of color and were also great for pear pancakes the next morning. 🙂
Sometimes I wish this fall harvest season could last for 3-4 months instead of just one. But I can’t complain. Colorado really put on a spectacular fall show this year. So many beautiful fall colors every where I looked. And I’m so grateful for this fabulous outdoor fall season!
More Backyard Deck Fall Outdoor Decor Ideas
Last year was the first time ever I decorated our backyard deck for the fall. And I decided to go drastically different by using traditional fall colors like lots of orange, yellow and reds!
Whether you prefer to take the traditional route with large orange pumpkins or a more modern approach with the pastel colored heirloom varieties, there’s no doubt that pumpkins are often a centerpiece of outdoor decorations.
I like to buy pumpkins in variety of shapes, colors and textures. And often times, I use them to decorate my home decor indoors as well. Pumpkins can be stacked on top of each other – such a fun way to display them. Or they can simply be placed alone or in a planter.
I love to place them alongside a planter with bushy mums or other fall floral arrangements. The pumpkin decorating ‘great ideas’ are endless really!
Besides adding lots of pumpkins, I love to make our fall outdoor areas extremely cozy as well with extra throws and pillows!
Adding a throw and some soft pillows to an outdoor chair or seating area invites family and guests to cozy up, sit back and enjoy all the beauty nature has to offer!
As you can see, a few simple additions can make a big impact when it comes to fall decoration ideas. If you happen to find yourself feeling overwhelmed by comparing your diy fall decor to all the over-the-top amazing DIY fall outdoor decor ideas you see in the magazines (like Better Homes and Gardens). Just remember – there is beauty in simplicity.
And if you don’t find time to decorate, don’t worry. Nature will gladly do it for you – thank goodness! 🙂 Stay tuned for part 2 of my fall home tours!

Everything looks so pretty! I skipped the mums this year too. In MN it was a hard frost one day and 80 two days later. They don’t last long. Your tree is beautiful!!!
Thank you, Mary! We can have drastic temp changes here in Colorado too and the mums seem to die like overnight. Ugh! So it was kinda fun to skip them this year – I totally didn’t miss watering them. 😉
I love, love fall colors – beautifully styled outdoor setting! Love what you did here!
Thank you so much, Terri! Our backyard was such a treat this fall – thanks to our giant elm! 🙂
