How To Style A Console Table

As you know, I am not a professional interior designer. I’m just a lady that loves to play with her home decor. And most of my inspiration to do so comes from observing the pros.

So when I was creating this post, I used a ton of visuals from high end retailers or professional interior designers. They are great stylist and so good at what they do!

But the pros inspiration can come with much higher price tags – and I don’t want that to discourage you. There’s no need to spend a ton of money to have a beautifully styled console table. Do what I do, take the inspiration and then shop for a look for less!

I promise you, every inspiration idea you’ll find below can easily be recreated on a budget. So having said that – now let’s talk about my best simple ideas for styling a console table!

Draw The Eye Up

Let’s first start by drawing the eye above the console and filling in that blank wall. I have three simple ways to add height your entryway table.

Add A Mirror

One great way to do this is with a very large statement mirror!

A mirror can create a wonderful focal point that draws your eye in, thus balancing the whole entry look. Mirrors are also great for making small spaces (like entryways) seem much bigger by simply by reflecting the sunlight in the room.

Plus a large mirror offers a bonus feature allowing you to give yourself a quick check before walking out the door or opening the door for your guests!

And the third way is to use some big, oversized green branches or stems!

Bright Greenery

A big vase of bright green stems adds a lovely punch of color to a console table. And it can nicely balance out a larger accessory like a table lamp.

I love the stems in this inspiration picture below and how the branches are even higher than the mirror. So pretty!

Now it’s time to draw our attention to the space below the console table. Leave it open or fill it in? What looks good under the table? I have a few ideas!

Ground The Bottom

When styling an open console table, you want to keep the visual weight in balance. And we can do this by adding some substantial items to ground the bottom of the table.

There are several different ways to achieve this, so let’s take a closer look at each option.

Tuck In Some Seating

If you have a very small entry way, tucking in some extra seating in the empty space under the table is great option.

Not only does it give balance to the open table but it also offers your guests a quick place to sit when coming into or leaving your home.

Another great way to ground the bottom of an open console is with some large storage baskets.

Add Storage Baskets

Baskets not only offer some great texture detail to the entryway, but also can be a very practical providing extra storage in a very high traffic area.

My boys were great about throwing their shoes into the baskets! No more tripping hazards and I didn’t have to look at everyone’s shoes all the time!

TIP TO REMEMBER: A good rule of thumb is to make sure whatever items you style on the bottom are tall enough to leave only a small space between them and the top of the console.

Oversized Floor Piece

If you have a console table that is open with a support board in the middle, placing a few large objects on the sides of the table will also help to ground the bottom.

You could use an extra large vase or a stack of large baskets as featured in this great example below.

Add Significant Accessories

Now that we discussed the discussed the spaces above and below the console table, let’s chat about how to decorate the table itself.

When it comes to styling a console table, starting with the larger pieces always makes the process easier. So add in those significant accessories like vases, table lamps or stacked books first.

Just a little tip to keep in mind when styling larger, more significant pieces – if something looks off, consider matching the scale of items on either side of the console. For example, if you place a large lamp on the left, try adding a vase on the right with a similar scale or size to easily bring cohesion to the whole console table.

Now, let’s start with the vases!

Add A Stylish Vase

Vases can add a tremendous amount of texture and detail to the table. Not to mention, a tall vase is great for holding that fabulous greenery we talked about!

There are so many ways to light up a console entryway table as well. Let me show you!

Layer Some Lighting

I don’t think I love anything more that set of paired table lamps on a super long console table. They give the table such balance, detail and symmetry! Love the contrast of the ceramic black too.

But another great lighting option could be a pair of wall sconces. They can add a ton of character to the wall above the console and spotlight the table as well. And it frees the table up for more stylish decor options.

Or you can just go for a minimal look by allowing the sconces to show off a home decor collection like the vases featured below.
