The Christmas season is officially here and it’s time to deck the halls (or rather) the trays! I’ve only had my tiered tray for a few months, but I can already tell I’m going to enjoy decorating it for the changing seasons. There was the Fall version and now I’m going to show you how to easily decorate a farmhouse tray for Christmas. This year, I decided to go with a neutral theme and I love how it came together!

The steps in creating a beautifully styled Christmas tray is as easy as one, two, three.

One, decide on the focus colors. My Christmas theme this year is centered around the colors black and white. So I gathered up all the Christmas items I could find in those colors. I had several white tea candle houses, a couple black bowls, some ornaments, a few reindeer, and some buffalo check wrapping paper for mini presents. I chose green (evergreen filler) and brown (wrapping paper) for a couple of neutral accent colors. To me, the best color combinations is two main focus colors with just one or two accent colors.

Two, symmetry is your friend. I’ve found this to be especially true when working with a tired tray. By keeping a balance on placement of decor items, the eye seems to have a more harmonious visual. I know I’m attracted to symmetry, and I’m willing to bet…you are too! 😉

For example, I made sure to give each level a little white tea candle house. But on the bottom tier (being the biggest), I placed two. I only had two black bowls, so I used one on the middle and bottom shelf.

The bottom shelf also has the biggest presents, but only two. By placing three different presents on the middle shelf, I kept the balance. You want to know a secret? Those presents are just completely empty boxes wrapped. I don’t have a single thing bought for Christmas yet. So I say there’s no shame in wrapping empty presents. (More like….. the cheapest Christmas decor I could ever DIY.)

The reindeer were the easiest to place because they varied in sizes. So I simply just matched the size of the deer to the size of the shelf; smallest on top and largest on bottom. I just love those reindeer…wish I could keep them out year round. 😉

And finally three, evaluate and tweak. Real technical, I know! 😉 But it’s an important step. I moved my items around several times, just to make sure every level had a little of everything. The perfect mix of focus colors, symmetry and a little touch of Christmas magic (tea candles). At night, it’s so pretty with the little lights twinkling.
