What to Wear For Fall Family Photos
Last weekend our family did something for the first time and I can’t wait to do it again. We took family photos… outdoors. In the Fall foliage! It was something I’ve been wanting to do for years. You saw a sneak peek last Friday, but now I am sharing a bunch more pictures! But this post is not all about looking at our family photos. Keep on reading because I’m also sharing tips on what to wear for your next Fall family photos.
This one is a rare because Britton is actually smiling. He was constantly on the move and just wanted to explore the whole park. 😉
And even Sebastian was captured doing some of his own exploring…
Although our session was short because the little one had other plans, our wonderful friend Amie managed to work her magic and capture some fantastic pictures that I will treasure for years. Even a playful one caught everyone’s personalities beautifully…
When it came to deciding what to wear, I knew I wanted us to coordinate but not be matchy, matchy. Here is what we were wearing for the photos…
Honestly, I based everyone’s outfit off of mine. I wanted to feel comfortable in the photos and I love my aqua top. I knew my husband did not own one piece of clothing with aqua, nor did he want to wear aqua! 😉 So I decided to coordinate aqua with grey and navy. Both of the boys tops have lines of aqua in them plus some navy. The baby’s shirt also has some grey in it, coordinating with Chris’s grey top. Then for our pants, I decided to go with jeans since we would be outdoors and it would be a more casual setting.
Here are the four tips I ‘focused’ on when planning what to wear. Focused, get it? 😉 Little camera humor for ya!
Tip 1: Focus on Comfort
I knew that I was probably the most self conscious of the family, so I picked what I wanted to wear first. Let the most nervous family member pick their clothes first and then work around their choices. I promise you, you’ll be rewarded on picture day!
Tip 2: Focus on Setting
Is it outdoors? Indoors? Since ours was outdoors we could go more casual and it would look completely natural. For indoors, you can definitely dress up more if you like. Also, if outdoors think of the background. I knew we had a good chance of being in front of golden Fall trees, so I kept that color in my mind when selecting outfits.
Tip 3: Focus on Neutral
Use a neutral color to run through all the photos. Usually this will make up the biggest part of the outfits. We chose jeans, but khakis, dark pants are all good examples. Shoes fall in this category too because this will help to draw attention upwards to your faces and not your feet.
Tip 4: Focus on Color
Wait…what? Didn’t you just say stay with neutrals? Yes, I did. But you got to add some pop! You can do this two ways: as a main color or as an accent color. For main, think large items like shirts, coats or vests. For an accent, think accessories like scarfs, hats, belts or ties.
Those are my tips and I think they helped me make this photo session a success. 😉 Remember to have fun too and be flexible if you’re working with little ones. Britton was constantly on the move, so we didn’t get as many group shots BUT we did get some awesome candid shots. It all works out!
Here are some close ups of our outfits with sources for your convenience:
I think all the outfits worked well together. And I can’t wait until our next outdoor family photo.
The pictures are beautiful!
Everyone looks great in the photos. Love all your choices.
