The Basement Family/Play Room Makeover – Week 6

|

It’s finally here…week six of the One Room Challenge. That means it’s time for the final reveal of the basement family/play room makeover. I have some good news and some bad. No one likes bad news first, so let me share the good news. I created a reading nook!

You may remember in week five, I ran into a problem. It was this built in cabinet space that I originally planned on ripping out. But since that baby was attached to drywall, I had to go to plan B. That was a challenge in itself cause I didn’t have a plan B. 😉 But after a few hours of looking around on Pinterest and with help from my sisters, I came up with an idea. This is how this space looked week one:

I promise you…there is a cabinet under all that stuff. 😉 This is how it looks now…

Love how this reading nook turned out. A simple ladder and a few shelves did wonders!

A big difference, ya? I decided to paint the cabinet wood white with Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I think now it looks more modern. My next step was to add a ladder. A permanently attached ladder was not an option because then I wouldn’t be able to access the doors beneath. So I decided to attach an industrial pipe. That way the ladder could slide to either side securely. I am surprised that my idea worked so beautifully! All that’s left is to add a coat of paint. 🙂

For the books, I made my own shelves out of 1 x 4 and 1 x 2 mdf boards. I also painted them the same color as the cabinet. To add a little pop, I picked up some big wooden letters at Hobby Lobby and painted them in Sea Star. The word READ is the same color as my accent wall. 🙂

I love how how this wall turned out. Maybe now my kids will even read more!

Oh right, now for the bad news. My sectional and rug have still not arrived. So the rest of the room isn’t really finished. Bummer, I know. I was really disappointed that I couldn’t reveal the whole room complete. But, don’t worry. You will see this room in it’s entirety. Everything is set to arrive on the 20th and I will then share all the details with you!

Thank you so much for hanging in there with me! 🙂
