The dining room is an area that has definitely seen some changes over the past decade or so. In past years, it was considered closed off and only for holidays or special occasions. Fast forward to today and now the dining area is more of an open place to gather for everyday uses.
So with the increase in use comes more questions about how to style the dining table when you’re not eating there. Today I want to share with you inspiration of simple, laid-back dining table centerpiece ideas for the everyday. All of these are elegant but feel very live-able for the dining area.
Why Decorate Your Dining Table With A Centerpiece?
First off, if you are wondering why you should decorating your dining table, let me ask you a question. What happens to any flat, empty surface area in your home? It often gets covered in paper, junk and toys – or that’s what happens in my house!
So by filling the center of your table with a purposeful decoration, the table is less likely to be occupied with clutter. And since we all want our homes to remain as clutter free as possible, a simple table centerpiece can solve this problem before it even starts!
What Style Of Dining Table Centerpiece Do I Need?
The purpose of a dining table centerpiece (besides reducing clutter) is to create a focus for the table. It grounds your table and takes away that ‘floating feeling’ when it’s just a bare table.
A kitchen table centerpiece can come in a variety of different types and styles. But basically it comes down to something you’ve created or something already made.
So let’s expand on those table decoration ideas further by looking at some easy centerpieces.
Kitchen Table Centerpiece Ideas To Inspire You
I have some fabulous inspiration full of great ways to decorate the table by layering it with one or several decorative items thus creating a unique one-of-a-kind look.
Fresh Flowers
Can you ever go wrong with fresh flower arrangements? I think we all know the answer to that – no way! A gorgeous bouquet is always a great option for the center of the table.
This grapevine nest filled with tulips and mums is placed next to everything you need to get dinner on the table. So this centerpiece is not only pretty but also incredibly functional for everyday life!
Maybe add a few candle holders for an instant glow at night. That’s all this table setting needs!
Large Centerpiece
Want an even more simple centerpiece? Why not go with a large centerpiece such as a garden planter filled with your favorite potted plant. It’s a great way to give your table a fresh look.
Vases of Varying Heights
One idea that I think makes a stunning centerpiece is two vases of varying heights filled with some simple branches. All you need to do is venture out into your backyard for this sophisticated centerpiece.
This one look is so simple but yet it’s filled with so much texture and adds a dramatic statement. I love how one of the vases is left empty as well. Don’t over complicate it – simple is best!
Tiered Tray
A tiered tray can be a another beautiful centerpiece that can also add function. You can use it to add color to the table with fresh fruit or flowers.
But you can also use it to store dinnerware, flatware or even napkins for upcoming meals. Place it in the middle of your table and everything is right within a hands reach but still looks so classy!
Such a great idea for a small kitchen that’s tight on storage as well.
Simple Centerpiece of Plants
I recently added this new look to our dining space. A simple wood tray filled with potted plants placed on a striped table runner. I’m still wondering why I never did this look before! 🙂
This type of centerpiece looks best on a long table – usually in a rectangle shape.
I’ve been working hard to keep that maidenhair fern alive and so far – so good! I just really love this simple plant look, especially for the spring time.
Fruit Bowl
Make the centerpiece multifunctional by creating a simple bowl of fruit. Fruit comes in so many bright colors that it always makes a wonderful splash of color to the table.
Not big on fruit? Maybe display a faux option like artichoke. This one bowl give lots of texture and depth to the table.
Glass Flower Vase
Clear glass is always a good option as well. It’s great for reflecting light and brightening a rather drab table setting. This glass vase below was filled with fresh purple and white tulips. But you could always go with faux flowers as well. It will be our secret! 😉
Fool-Proof Table Centerpiece Combo
Now this is a look from one of my favorite interior designer that is basically fool-proof. One large center piece with a gorgeous black vase and then a vintage tray filled with meal necessities.
Pop in a small vase with white flowers and it’s simply perfect. A great everyday look!

Which of the dining table centerpiece ideas was your favorite for an everyday look?
Laura – my husband gifted me with this very large (15.2″) gorgeous Copper Canyon Nambe bowl. He had no idea it was this large. Figure to put on large dining table. Do you have any clever decorative ideas of what to do with this? Not sure that it would look good just sitting there “blank” (or empty) so to speak. Thanks Penny

Wow, Penny! That’s a beautiful bowl! Your husband treated you right. 😉 I think the real beauty of the bowl is the copper center so if it were me, I think I would just leave it empty. And placing it in the middle of a large dining room table would be perfect for everyday decor!
