How To Make a Springy Painted Doormat Tutorial

Freshen your front door for spring with my easy painted doormat tutorial. 

If you stop and listen, I’m pretty sure you’ll hear it. It’s a slow clap of applause from my neighbors because I finally took down my outside Christmas decor.  A few days ago I finished my new spring painted doormat tutorial and I needed to take pictures of it outside. The Christmas garland was just throwing the whole thing off. 😉 So, I guess it is time to start thinking spring decor!

My spring DIY painted doormat tutorial is, of course, super simple. And it’s neutral, layered decor makes it the perfect mat for your front door this spring!

The inspiration for my door mat tutorial came from one of my favorite doormats (found here). I just loved the play on words. So I took that play and added a little spring on my step. See what I did there? Couldn’t help myself. 🙂

The whole process for this spring painted door mat is easy as 1, 2, 3. Let’s break down the steps. (Affiliate links provided for your convenience.)

The Supplies

The great thing about this little spring painted doormat tutorial is you don’t have to spend a fortune on the supplies. My total cost for this project was just a little over $20 bucks — and that’s including the cost of the mat! 

The Stenciling

The first step was to figure out my placement of the text. My letters were 4 inches tall so I decided to space the two lines of text 4 inches from the top and bottom. This would leave about 2 inches of spacing between the rows of text. I marked my first line of text four inches from the top with the painters tape. The tape acted as my guide to keep all the letters level as I stenciled. Once I had the text centered from top to bottom, I had to decide on the placement from left to right. 

Using my painters tape again, I placed two strips from the edge of the door mat towards the center. Since the tape is two inches wide — this also measured out to be four inches wide total. Once the placement of the letters was determined, it was time to use my stencil and Sharpie to outline each letter.

I will warn you, the stenciling can get a bit messy. At least it did for me. The texture of the rug is so rough that marking with the Sharpie can cause a little splatter effect. Just so ya know. 😉 

The Painting

After the letters were all stenciled, it was time to paint them in. This was probably the absolute easiest part of the whole project. My only goal here was to just stay inside the lines. 😉 

So once the painted letters were dry, it was time to move the rug outdoors to the front step. To accommodate my spring look, I placed a glass lantern with a faux fern on the step. This whole area just needs more green — but since it’s still early for spring weather — I will have to fake it for now.  I am in love with my new springy doormat! It’s got a classic look with a dash of fun. 😉
