Refreshing the Living Room with 3D Design Plans

Our living room has been an area I’ve really struggled to decorate from day one that we moved in. If you have a room in your home that you find challenging to decorate…stop what you are doing and read this post because it is written for YOU!

Here’s a picture of our living room last fall. Four main problems in this room that I struggle with are: the fireplace, the tv wall, our desks and the seating area.

Let’s start with that corner fireplace. I would love it to be centered on the main wall so there’s only one main focus area in the room. Do we angle the sectional to focus on the tv or on the fireplace? Maybe we should put the tv over the fireplace? I don’t know…

I’ve wondered how to design the tv wall for forever, too. I added some photos, but I think that wall needs more? Maybe even some wall sconces flanking the tv? 

Another design challenge for this room is the two desks. Chris really wanted the computers to be close to the main action of the home. Yes, we have a basement where they could be placed, but we didn’t want our boys down in the basement by themselves on the computer with no one monitoring what they’re seeing. But, how do you incorporate desks into the living room decor and not have the area look like an office space?

And lastly, the seating in this room needs to be replaced. We purchased our sectional back when our first son was a baby. It’s about eleven years old now. And between the kids and dog, it’s definitely showing it’s wear.  I liked the leather, but now I want something lighter and brighter.

Design Option One

Here’s an aerial view of the first design option…

Now let’s look at the living room from the front. My first impression of this design was….WOW! I loved that sofa selection and we never thought to switch out our rectangle coffee table. The round wood style is so sleek and would give the area more room!

We also liked the idea of the wood desks in the back. They seemed to blend in more with the natural decor of the space. 

For this side of the room, it’s pretty similar to my style but they added extra seating to the corner besides the tv media console. I’ve thought about adding a chair there. And now that I see it in place, I think it’s a great idea! 

They also created a nice gallery wall on the tv wall and I like their layout of the frames. More would be better! Now let’s look at another option….

Design Option Two

My designer also included a second design. Here’s the aerial view:

 

I just love that top down view. So cool! Now, let’s  look at this second design from the front…

This layout is very similar to the first design, just a few design changes. They added a side table and updated the desk to more of a console look — which I love! 

I like that tall sofa lamp too. It adds some great light to the couch area. Chris fell in love with the wood wall art on the back wall. He thought that added some fantastic texture and detail to the space. I would have never, ever thought to add something like that to the room. That’s why Modsy is so great!

In the second design, they placed the tv over the fireplace. It’s great because it gives the room the one main focus area I have been wanting. 

Even though we loved both designs, Chris and I knew we needed more seating. We are a family of four (including two growing boys!) so we wanted the living room to have enough seating so we all could snuggle together to watch tv or movies.

So I emailed my designer and she was so kind to offer me a third design!

Bonus: Third Design Option

Here’s the aerial view of this layout:

Their design is pretty similar to our present living room but they used a lighter, upholstered sectional. I love the clean modern look. And did you see all those pillows in it?! 😉 Another great change they made with the third design was the lighting by the couch. That arc floor lamp is perfect for our space! 

They kept the same round table in this design because I mentioned how much we loved the look. 

And for this side of the room they added a different corner chair in blue with nail head trim. I love that accent color for a chair and it goes perfectly with the couch too!

One of my favorite parts of viewing these designs from Modsy was seeing how they accessorized the space. I have never thought to style vases on the fireplace hearth. But in every design they do and it looks so stylish! 

Overall, I am SO GLAD I asked Modsy for help with this room. I now have a ton of great ideas on how to decorate this space and the confidence to do them because I have already envisioned the results!
