Easily Transform the Entryway

Easily transform the entryway in just a few steps. No matter the size, it’s possible to make the area extremely functional and modern at the same time! 

Our family rarely uses the front door. For us, we daily venture out through the back garage entryway. Even though this area in our home is really small, I was determined to easily transform the entryway and make it super functional for our families needs. And why not modernize the look at the same time. 

Here’s what the entryway doors looked like before – door on the left goes to the garage and door on right is access to a half bathroom and laundry room.

And today this space looks so much better!

I love the transformation — it looks completely different! This whole new look only required three simple steps to create a super useful and modern entryway.

Transform the Door

The first thing I did was paint the doors. I removed the door knobs and then I applied one coat of primer. Once that was dry, I gave all the doors two coats of Divine White paint by Sherwin Williams. I love this color of white because it’s not a blinding white – just crisp and clean looking.

After the doors were painted, it was time to dress them up with some moulding. I used a door and window casing moulding that had a very simple detail. To find the correct placement of the moulding, I lightly drew out the pattern with a pencil on the door. Then I taped each piece of the moulding in place with painters tape. This way I could double check all my cuts and make sure I had nice tight corners.

To cut the moulding, I used a simple miter box saw because I wanted to work at night while my little one was sleeping. (A regular miter saw is better and the work goes faster — but just too loud for night projects!) The miter box is a great alternative if you’re scared of big, loud saws, too. 😉 

To attach the moulding to the door, I  just used liquid nails. The painters tape held it in position while the glue dried. All that was left was to caulk the corner seams and around the edge of all the moulding for a clean, professional look. Once all that dried, I gave the moulding a quick paint over with the Divine White so everything matched. 

Update the Hardware

I was not a fan of our cheap, builder grade door hardware. Good thing it’s so affordable to update them. I switched the door knobs, latch plates and hinges. I replaced everything with an oil rubbed bronze look except the spring loaded hinges on the garage door. Not sure — I think I just forgot! (Now, they are next on the to-do list apparently!)

I plan on changing all the upstairs bedroom/bathroom doors to this same hardware. It’s just so more unique and fun.  And I love the pop of color from the oil-bronzed look on the white doors! 

Add Some Accessories

Once I had the door painted and dressed up with new trim and hardware, it was time to add some much-needed accessories to this small entryway. We needed a place for everyone to hang coats, backpacks and a place for my purse. When I saw these round wood hooks, I knew they were perfect to hang my favorite leather bag! 

To make this area more functional, a shelf was still needed for keys and sunglasses. So I found this little black metal wall shelf, I knew it would be a perfect fit for our small entryway wall.

A cute letterboard sign with a great quote, that’s just an accessory that every home needs, if you ask me!

The final touch was a pretty wreath on the garage door and a fun buffalo check rug for the floor. And that’s was it… the new entryway was now better than ever!

So if you have a super small entryway like we do, don’t be intimidated! Think outside the box, or rather — the space and easily transform the entryway into a place that makes your home better!
