Container Garden Tips – Thriller, Filler, Spiller Method

“Sweet April showers do spring May flowers.” Especially if you plant them yourself! Yesterday I did a little container gardening and added some pretty blooms to my front door. If you have never tried to create a container garden it’s really simple to do using the Thriller, Filler, Spiller method. I used that method here and see how pretty mine turned out…

The first step is to grab a plant container. My container is about 20 inches tall, so it would take a lot of potting soil to fill. But, I have a little trick…packing peanuts.

I use this to save on potting soil and to lighten the load of the pot. By doing so, I can more easily relocate the container garden if needed. Once my packing peanuts where settled in, I added my soil and then reached for my thriller plant.

For a thriller, you want something that is tall and will grab attention. I used a simple Spike in the center, to add some thrill to my container garden. Next, it was time to add in my filler plants.

The filler is where you can get really creative with color and flowers. I chose to use two different colors of petunias. I tend to gravitate to neutrals so this pop of pink is flashy for me! 😉 I planted those all around the my thriller spike plant. I made sure to leave room in the two front corners for my spiller plants.

For my spiller – the plant that will spill out of the container as it grows – I chose the sweet potato vine. I love their light, almost lime green coloring. It’s such a pretty contrast to the other plants in the garden.

So this container garden took me about 30 minutes from start to finish and I love how it instantly gave my front door a feeling of home.
