Learn how to make your house a home with five comfortable home design tips you can easily do!
Less house more home. I think this is a common goal we all want for our homes. A place that is uniquely us and feels extremely comfortable and cozy just like an old sweatshirt. But sometimes this desire to make a house a home feels overwhelmingly complicated. I’m here to tell you, it doesn’t have to be. And I’m going to share a great tip on how to find all of these items for your home at clearance prices!
When it comes to adding these five comfortable home design tips to your home, shopping is key and I know a great place to start! CORT Furniture Outlet sells both new and previously leased furniture. These items have been used in model homes, on movie sets, by home stagers, in corporate apartments, in corporate offices and by individuals who just need furniture temporarily. And all items are sold for just a fraction of their original retail price. All of the above furniture collages (from the Rugs to the Details) are pieces that can be found on their website! You can view all of CORT’s furniture selection on the CORT Blog by clicking right here.
Basically, a comfortable home design can be broken down into just five simple steps. I’m going to show you how I’ve transformed our house into a home starting from the floor up.
Rugs
The power of a cozy rug should not be underestimated. We have rugs in almost every room in our house — even the kitchen! Rugs can instantly add warmth and comfort to hardwood or tile floors. For example, when I’m cooking meals in the kitchen the rug absorbs some of the impact of my footsteps. Which in turn, takes the pressure off my body and makes long periods of standing at the range more comfortable.
Area rugs are also great for grounding a space. They can create an anchor for the furniture (like in the living room) which helps to make a cozy, intimate space for gathering with family and friends. Basically rugs are beauty and comfort all wrapped up into one soft, stylish rectangle for your floors! Heck, I even use rugs on my outside patio. They are almost like a must-have for turning a house into a home!
Storage
One thing a home needs is functionality. Before I can focus on the style of a room or space, I look at the basic necessities of storage. When the boys came along, I quickly felt like all their toys were taking over my house. Over the years, I’ve learned to strategically place storage consoles, baskets or decorative boxes throughout our home to store all their toys. The boys can now easily find something to play with and I don’t have to step on a Lego every five minutes!
Incorporating storage into your home not only helps keep clutter (or toys) contained, it also allows for the opportunity to display items we love and have meaning. Storage in the home can be as simple as a well-organized bookshelf, a stylish dresser, or even a comfy ottoman with a hidden compartment. So whether your home storage is about leaving room to display things that matter most to you, or using storage pieces to keep your home clean and tidy, this one simple step of giving everything a place of its own will be so helpful in creating a comfortable room design that feels like home.
Lamps
I am not a fan of overhead lighting. The only place it’s used is in the kitchen when I’m cooking meals. Once done, the light is off! For the rest of our home lighting we use lamps or sconces. Soft lighting creates a feeling of coziness in the home. One of the most comfortable things to do in our homes is read in bed, right? So the soft lighting from a lamp is going to be your best friend for this activity.
Want a trick to improve the lighting in your home? Two words: dimmer switches. They’ll allow you to control the lighting for day to night or even help you set the mood. (bow chicka chicka wow wow!) I’ve installed dimmers in every home we’ve owned. Such an inexpensive change that can instantly give your house a more comfortable home design.
Art
I love this quote by Billy Baldwin: No room is comfortable until there are things to “sit upon, put upon, and gaze upon”. A few simple pieces of art can really change the feel of a house. Art work doesn’t have to be an expensive museum quality painting. As long as its special and meaningful to you – that’s all that really matters. Some of my most precious artwork is simple drawings from my boys. 🙂
I find the best way to select art for your home is to make a list of the things that inspire you. It could be special family portraits, a landscape photograph of a dream vacation spot, abstract patterns – or anything else that makes you smile when you look at it. When these items are given a special spot in your house they’ll give a whole new meaning to your home. The art you place in your home expresses to your visitors what you find beautiful in life. So share that beauty with others!
Details
We have all heard the saying, ‘It’s all in the details’. And it’s so true when it comes to comfortable home design! Those little details in your house make it a home. One of my favorite ways to add some pretty details to a room is with plants. No, I don’t have a green thumb. I’m actually on my fourth fiddle leaf fig because the first three didn’t make it. But I just love the pop of green color plants add to our home. I can’t stop buying them! But I’ve also learned that sometimes faux plants can be another great option as well. 🙂
Another great way to add comfy accents to your home is with pillows and throws. Or even changing out the cabinet hardware or light switch plates can be one more way to make your house feel more uniquely you and your style.
