Easy Linen Closet Organization Tips and Storage Ideas

Linen closet organization is easy when you know the best steps to take and have the right tools for the task!

Oh happy day! I am so excited to share this organized linen closet reveal with you. Both of my linen closets were such a disorganized mess and I kept putting them off thinking it would take forever to get them organized.

But, I was wrong. Once I made a plan and gathered my tools, it was so easy!

Here’s a little peek into our newly organized linen closet. My main goal was for everything to have it’s own place, be clearly marked and have easy access. This way everyone in the house knows where everything is and where it should go back!

Before I show you all the fun new details of the small linen closet, let’s take a look back at how unorganized they were at the start. And then I’ll explain how I got them beautifully organized.

So, here’s the linen closets before.

Both of these closets were a complete disaster. This one had way to many cleaning products and old bath towels. And dare I say, too much toilet paper. But is that ever a bad thing? 😉

And this smaller closet had so many fitted sheet sets and pillow cases, you’d think I ran a hotel!

Remove Everything

The first thing to do for acquiring an organized linen closet is to remove everything. This step is key to the whole process. It all needs to be out so you can see exactly what you’re storing.

I placed everything from both our linen closets into our guest bedroom. I was so surprised by how much stuff was crammed into such a tiny small space!

Add Some Style

Once everything was out, it was time for me to add some style to these boring, builder grade closets. I’ve been dying to hang some wallpaper in our home. So I decided the closets would be a great place for my first attempt.

If I do a horrible job, it’s hidden behind the closet door! 😉 And if I love it, I now have some experience hanging it and I can place some more in our home.

You know how much I love my neutrals, so when I spotted this diamond sketch wallpaper, I knew it was going to be perfect!  And I was so right. Don’t you love the look?

The wallpaper was actually really easy to hang. The only problem was that I didn’t order enough and it has been back-ordered for over a month. UGH — so frustrating.

So there is a tiny bit of this closet that is not finished and my smaller closet has none. But as soon as it the wallpaper gets delivered, I am finishing the closets and I will update this post! 😉

Sort, Dump and Donate

Now that the whole closet space is so much prettier, it’s time to sort through everything I removed from it. This task took me a little time.

But it was necessary because no one needs six sets of sheets for one bed. And we had way to many old towels that could be donated and useful to someone.

All this extra stuff just sitting in my closet was no help to anyone — including me! So I sorted similar items into piles, dumped some of it and donated the rest.

Get Organization Tools

Once the sorting was done, I could see what I had left to organize. To me, this is when the real fun begins. 🙂 I went shopping at the Container Store to get all my storage bins, canisters, baskets, and labels.

I wanted to stay with a clean neutral look. But I didn’t want everything to match. So I chose to stay with grays and use hyacinth weaved baskets to add some warmth and texture. All the organizing items I used in both closets will be featured at the end of the post.

Let’s look at the larger linen closet first.

I decided to use the top shelf and floor to store larger items – like seasonal items such as bedding and beach towels. The large hyacinth basket stores our towels and for the bedding I used two compacter storage boxes.

These storage containers are so helpful because the amount they can store is crazy!

For example, in one I have king velvet quilt, three king velvet shams, two king quilts and a king set of flannel sheets. It’s fantastic!

Hyacinth baskets were perfect for organizing smaller items for the first aid and pharmacy at eye level. Our first aid basket holds items like cotton balls, band-aids, and rubbing alcohol.

You never know when you are going to need these items, so it’s best to keep them organized and up to date (check expiration dates).

So remember all those extra sheets sets, well I have simplified them down to only two sets per room. And to store them on the lower shelves in lined baskets.

I love the style of the loft woven bins. That little hint of black detail woven and the leather handles had my heart happy! 😉

To clearly mark each room’s set, I used these black bin clips and some laundry labels. To get a little creative with the labels, I had to cut out separate letters. So ‘m sheets’ is for the primary room, ‘g sheets’ are for guest rooms and ‘b sheets’ for the boys room.

And finally, all that toilet paper got a home of it’s own too!

Now, a tour of the smaller closet.

Since all of the sheets were moved to the larger closet, I used this small closet to store extra towels and cleaning items.

These smaller wire baskets were the perfect size for small items like our hand towels and wash clothes.

Remember all my disorganized cleansers? Well, that problem is solved in the most stylish way! One large bristol storage box keeps them all organized and hidden away. And now I know that I don’t need to order any more cleaning products for the rest of the year.

And speaking of cleaning products, I got this cute storage caddy to carry my bathroom cleaning supplies. It’s so handy to just grab it off the bottom shelf to clean the bathrooms quickly.

For the the extra space on the floor, I added another large hyacinth basket for a dirty clothes hamper.

Our hall bathroom is very close to these closets and all my boys love to leave their clothes on the bathroom floor. Mama just solved that problem with this great idea — oh yea!
