How to Organize Your Bills and Receipts {Tutorial} + Giveaway

| |
I like to be organized in almost every aspect of my life.
I would love to tell you that my finances have always
been at the top of my priority list in being organized.
But that would be a lie.
I can organize my cooking spices but not my money?
(insert rolling of the eyes here)
So this year, sticking with the theme of Improving Me in 2013,
I am going to get my finances in order and organized.
I started looking around at the beginning of the year
for some help or tips on how other people keep track of their money.

I stumbled upon a website called Clean Mama and along with some great cleaning tools.
she had a printable Budget and Bill Pay Kit!
This is exactly what I needed!
I went to Staples and gathered some supplies,
then I bought the kit, printed it out and got to organizing.

I organized my Martha Stewart binder with my new dividers
 and created 7 organized sections:

1) Checklist (a quick view let’s you know what bill is paid)

2) Budget (know where your money is going every month)

3) Debt (keep track of your decreasing debt) Bye bye! 🙂

4) Savings (keep track of your growing savings) Grow baby, grow!

 5) Due 1-15 (a quick view of what’s due the first half of the month)
6) Due 16-31 (a quick look at what’s due the last part of the month)

For these two categories I bought some pocket insert dividable
so I can place up coming bills in the correct half of the month.
And for the bills that are paperless,
I can simply log the amount of those bills and the date paid.

7) Receipts (all grocery receipts are kept here)

For my grocery receipts, I keep each month in an envelope.
I allow for $100 a week (left column) and $50 for miscellaneous needs (right column).
As I spend money,
I record it on the envelope and place the receipt inside.
This method helps to keep me on budget and lets me know when I have gone over.

I now have all my finances in order in one, sweetly organized binder.
But that’s not all of the great news…

Organizing Made Fun

  1. We must be twins separated at birth (born in San Antonio by chance?) Since I too love organizing but can’t ever seem to keep my finances organized! What gives I tell myself. Money is/should be a priority since we have to have it. I would love to see my savings grow by winning the starter kit instead of having to buy it, but if not, thanks for getting us a discount!

  2. This morning I walked by my bills/receipts pile, and thought “I need to do something about this”. Then I found a link to your blog on Pinterest! I would love to win the organizing kit, because I have only been married for a couple years and am still getting used to managing and running a home. My husband is in the military and maintaining a budget on his salary is really important. Even if I don’t win I think this post will motivate me to get organized! And thanks for the discount code 🙂

  3. So I’ve never entered in to ‘win’ something before. Normally because I’d feel guilty of taking something from someone who was more deserving. However, in this case I feel like I could REALLY use this at this point of my life. I’m 23 years old and six months ago I gave birth to my second son who shortly after birth was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Now I’m not using this as a pity party but the news was quite a shock and I’m still attempting/dreading going through all of our crazy amounts of medical bills. We also bought our first home 2 weeks before he was born so really just trying to get more organized so I don’t have that constant feeling chaos.

  4. Awesome ideas — everyone needs help getting better organized at the beginning of the year. This system looks like one could actually stick with it beyond the first month or so.

  5. i so need help organizing my finances. i hate receipts and bills, they easily get out of control. i need an easy way to get a handle on them.

  6. I began a home based business in addition to a full time job & a part time job. I need to be able to say on top of my income as well as my bills. This sounds like it would be a perfect system!

  7. I would LOVE to win the clean mama starter kit! I just moved to NC from Texas and I’m all over the place with everything I feel like I’m in a recurring hurricane! I think the starter kit would be a great start! I need some order in my life. I’ve been searching all over for blogs that I have the same interest in and I’ve finally found! Type A personalities unite!

  8. As I approach my 40th year, I have resolved finally to get on top of my finances — I recently realized that many women avoid addressing their finances — not because they fear bill collectors, but because they lack confidence and feel incompetent! I know I do! I have 3 college degrees, so I know I need only hit upon a system I can master. Thanks in advance for the help, Betsy! I’m glad I found you!

  9. With life’s insanity coming at my family with every breath I take… Stress has become my middle name. To get a handle on everything (time, cleaning, cooking and especially finances) would be a cool breeze in a dessert. Thanks ahead for the opportunity to enter your drawing.

  10. I would love to have a binder for my finances. Right now I use Excel for everything but my husband can’t figure my system out. Having a book where we both can write down things and look at it would be SO much easier. Plus he is starting a new job in March, and we really don’t want to mess up our finances.

  11. With my new little girl Matilda I’ve found it incredibly difficult to keep on top of things like the finances. I’d like to blame this on sleep deprivation but I think it’s more likely lack of organisation. I’d live to win these so I can get on track to keep to our new smaller budget with I’m in maternity leave and keep it going when I’m back to work.
Thanks for the giveaway and the great link to becky’s site.

  12. My husband usually takes care of the bills, but I know it is just one more thing he has to do with his busy schedule. This would make it so much easier for me to help out and take over! I love it!

  13. As a single mom of a 4 year old and 1 year old, working and college classes part time, need all the help I can get with ways to keep organized, would love to have this to start…

  14. Hey Laura, I love this post!!! I’ve been looking for ideas on how to organize bills and receipts and yours looks like it just might do the trick!!! Thanks ~ Amy

  15. Thank you for this giveaway. I want win this awesome giveaway. I love to keep things organized but when it comes to my bills and receipts I need an easier way to keep them organized. My receipts I just put in a container with a cover on it. and then before you know it I’m digging in the dish to find a receipt. My bills I don’t have anywhere to keep them so they are organized.

  16. Would love to win this kit! We have 3 children ages 3 and under. My husband and I work opposite shifts so we don’t have the expense of daycare. So essentially we are both single parents for 5 days a week. We need all the help we can get to stay organized!

  17. I am a single mother and I have owned my own hair salon for 4 years. Three months ago I purchased a building, changed locations and added a tanning salon to the mix. I am having the hardest time making sure all my bills are taken care of and this system looks like it is just what I need! Thanks so much for sharing I can’t wait to simplify!

  18. I would love to win this. My husband started working in the construction trade a year ago (after 2 years of no job) and getting through this winter was a total shock to us. We need to put a budget and savings plan together to get us through the lean work times. This would help so much.

  19. I’m drowning. In debt. In clutter. In total lack of confidence or direction. This could Help. At least make a start.

  20. I really really need this kit! I’m a born organizer but it seems I can never get my finances organized. My paperwork is all a mess and this would simplify my life!

  21. Great ideas to organize bills and receipts. Thank you for sharing your post at #HomeMattersParty. We would love to have you again next week.

  22. I organize my bills and finances similar to you. I definitely need your bill pay checklist though. Thanks for sharing at the #ThisIsHowWeRoll Link Party.
