Tips On What To Eat When Nursing

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and healthy mama® , but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #gethealthymama

Nursing Britton is a privilege that I am so thankful I can do. I often remind myself to treasure these moments because I know they’ll be short lived. But as much as I love our special bonding time, sometimes I feel like he is sucking the energy right out of me!

I’ve discovered that if I’m careful about my diet I have more energy throughout the day and Britton gets a better milk supply. I’m going to share with you my tips on what to eat when nursing to boost your energy levels. These six changes have worked well for me when breastfeeding baby B. and hopefully they’ll help you too!

what to eat when you're nursing

First up, think green. To make sure Britton and I are getting all the vitamins and minerals we need, I eat try to eat a vegetable or fruit with each meal. I especially love to eat lots of broccoli, spinach and avocados.

Grab a glass and hydrate. Did you know breast milk is about 87% water? Less water in your diet means less milk supply for baby. I try to drink about 6 glasses of water a day.  I’ve found that I can easily consume more water in my day just by having a water bottle with me. When I drink lots of water I notice an increase in my energy, every time!

Go fish. I may have just lost you here, but wait just a sec. Fish are full of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids that great for you and your baby. (Note: Be sure to avoid the ones high in mercury like shark, swordfish, and marlin). If you’re vegetarian or hate fish maybe use a fish oil supplement like I do. Make sure it’s also free of contaminants. 🙂

Don’t forget the protein. I’m always needing more protein in my diet. One of my new favorite ways to get it is by drinking a  healthy mama® ’s Boost it Up! This all natural drink is packed with 7-grams of protein and B-vitamins for energy. I easily grabbed one at Walmart (while supplies last) in the vitamin section (next to prenatal vitamins) and was on my way. It’s a great pick-me-up in the afternoon when all I really want to do is take a nap!

A few sweet treats. Try not to cure lack of sleep with sweet treats. I love my ice cream but I try to not go overboard filling up on empty calories that will eventually end up on my thighs.

Treat the aches. I don’t know if it’s because I just hit the big 4-0 or what, but my body seems to have more aches and pains lately. When my body is hurting my energy level plummets! healthy mama® ’s Shake that Ache! works great for my muscles aches and back pain. Hey… carrying around a 18 pounder all day is not easy on this mamas body! 😉
