Spring Cleaning Challenge Day 4: Cleaning Pillows

| |
Today’s challenge is focusing on your pillows and the best ways to clean them.

Most people launder their sheets once a week,
but bed pillows are an item we don’t often think of washing.

If you use pillows for hanging decorations,
then I guess you can skip this cleaning challenge. 🙂

But if you are like most of us and you use your pillow for sleeping every night,
 it’s time for a cleaning.

The best tips for washing pillows are:
  • Unless the care instructions say otherwise, most down and synthetic pillows can be easily be machine-washed
  • Make sure to wash two at a time to balance the load
  • Use the gentle cycle, warm water and mild detergent
  • Run them through the rinse cycle twice to rinse them thoroughly
  • Feather and foam pillows should be washed in sink filled with warm water and powdered detergent
  • Hold the pillows underwater until completely soaked, kneed gently
  • Drain the dirty water out and press down to extract as much water as possible
  • Give it a spin in the washing machine for 3 cycles
The best tips for drying pillows are:
  • synthetic pillows can be placed in dryer on low; fluffing often
  • throw in some clean towels to help speed up the drying process
  • add tennis balls or clean tennis shoes to help plump them up
  • add a dryer sheet to give a nice fresh fragrance (optional)

  • feather and foam pillows can be air dried in the sunshine
  • can use the air cycle on dryer as well
  • make sure all pillows are completely dry as dampness can lead to mold
If you follow these cleaning tips,
the next time you lay your head down to sleep it will be on a fresh, clean pillow.
Awwwww…..sweet dreams.

Do you have any tried and true tips for cleaning your pillows?
I would love to hear them!

April Spring Cleaning Challenge

  1. I can’t believe I just found this. Such great tips. I have thrown my pillows in the dryer but they tend to bunch up, not fluff up. I will have to try the Ball

  2. Another note: on sunny days, lay your pillows on a towel in the seats of your patio furniture. Airing them makes them smell fresh and the sunshine is good for killing bacteria and for working on eliminating any discoloration.

  3. I really should try these tips! I’m not that great at details when it comes to cleaning, but fresh pillows would sure be nice!

  4. My only tip is that I wash our pillows twice a year, in the fall and in the spring. Thanks for sharing at the This Is How We Roll Link Party on Organized 31,

  5. Thanks for the awesome tips. I’m terrible about remembering to wash my pillows. When I strip the bed every week, I think about doing them, but by the time I get an empty washing machine again, I am too tired to run another load. I guess I need to put aside a laundry day and focus on pillows only. Thanks for the advice and thanks for sharing at Dare to Share Saturday!

  6. Great tips! I need to follow along your challenge I’m sure I’ll come across some reminders. I could use a little nudging. Thanks for sharing at the Inspiration Spotlight party! Hope to see you again soon. Shared…
