DIY Beverage Station

We moved into our new home last fall and this is the first time we are experiencing summer here. I’ve discovered one of my favorite places to be is on my back porch late afternoon. We have tons of trees and with a gently breeze, it’s close to perfection. The only thing it really needs is some liquid refreshment. But now, thanks to my new Beverage Station from Home Depots DIH Workshop…my back yard is now complete.

In just four days (this Thursday) you can learn how to build a Beverage Station at your local Home Depot #DIHWorkshop. If you’ve never been to one of their do-it-herself workshops, you really need to give it a try! It’s a great way to get experience with different power tools! 😉

So here is what materials and tools I used to make my beverage station:

The materials you will need:

• 1 – 1/2″ x 2′ x 4′ sanded plywood board
• 3 – 1″ x 2″ x 8′ Common Board
• 1 box – 1 1/4″ x 18 gauge brad nails
• 1 – Twine/String
• 1 – Paint/Stain
• 1 – 10 Quart galvanized pail

The tools you will need:

• circular saw
• 18-gauge cordless brad nailer
• drill
• drill bits
• measuring tape
• pencil
• safety goggles
• sanding block
• reciprocating saw

The first step in the project is cutting all the wood. You will need to use the circular saw to cut the legs, long and short frame boards, the shelf braces, and three shelves.

From the 1″ x 2″ x 8′ boards cut:

• (4) 1″ x 2″ x 28 1/2″ legs
• (2) 1″ x 2″ x 16″ long frame
• (2) 1″ x 2″ x 14 1/2″ short frame
• (2) 1″ x 2″ x 14 1/2″ shelf brace

From the 2′ x 4′ plywood board cut:

• (1) 16″ x 16″ top shelf
• (1) 14 1/2″ x 13″ middle shelf
• (1) 14 1/2″ x 13″ bottom shelf

I decided to let the good people at Home Depot cut most of the wood for me. So if you don’t have a circular saw, no worries. 😉

The only thing I had to cut myself was the circle in the top shelf. To do this I marked the center of my plywood and then nailed a nail in the place marker. I tied one end of a string around the nail and the other to a pencil making sure that when stretched tight was only 5″ long. I then drew a circle keeping the string tight. I checked to make sure I had a 10″ diameter circle.

Once the circle was drawn I used my reciprocating saw to cut out the center. After all the wood cutting was complete, I gently sanded down all the rough edges with a sanding block. Now it was time to add some color to this project.

I bought a quart of Behr Premium Plus paint in Compass Blue in Satin.

I applied a few coats and after it dried completely it was time to start building the beverage station. This is where my favorite BFF tool comes into the story…my nail gun. It’s been a long time since we’ve been together…way too long! 😉

I started by creating the top shelf frame. I placed two  16″ long frames boards parallel to each other and then sandwiched in two 14 1/2″ short frame boards between the longer boards. You’ll end up with a 16″ x 16″ square frame. I secured all corners with the brad nailer.

Next I created the leg frames by laying two legs flat, 14 1/2″ apart. Then using the nail gun, I attached two 14 1/2″ shelf braces to the legs. One will be located 7 1/2″ from the bottom and another one 17 1/2″ from the bottom. I repeated this step with the other two legs and shelf braces.

Now it was time to assemble the station. I placed the top shelf on a flat surface and then inserted the leg frames upside down with the shelf braces facing inward. With everything flush, I secured with the brad nailer.

Once the legs were securely attached, I flipped the stand over and placed the 14 1/2″ x 13″ sections on the middle and bottom shelf braces and then secured them with my brad nailer.

The last step was to place on the 16″ x 16″ top shelf and secure with the brad nailer.

I then gave the whole beverage station one more coat of paint. After that dried, I decided to add a few accessories to complete the station. I found a cute hook plate at Home Depot that I knew would be perfect for an ice scoop, bottle opener, and a towel.

I also found the perfect sign to direct everyone to all the liquid refreshment…

On the very bottom shelf I placed a few glasses for those who would rather have a drink with ice.

I love how easy this project was and how I now have a perfect little seating area in my backyard oasis. My husband and I have already enjoyed using it the past few days. It’s almost like…how did we ever live without this?! 😉
